The Story Behind Mr. Higgins: David Preece Featured on WNHN

Author David Preece’s Mr. Higgins book series has received attention in The Concord Insider, which covered his interview on WNHN 94.7 FM’s What’s Your Story? Written with Jim Webber, the children’s stories follow a Scottish terrier as he learns about kindness, confidence and caring for others.

Preece joins co-hosts Fred Richards and Cary Gladstone to discuss what inspired the books. He also shares how his work in storytelling and public service has helped his writing. The conversation gives readers an inside look at the ideas behind Mr. Higgins’ adventures.

The character has a real-life story too. In 2014, Preece and Webber adopted a shy Scottish terrier named Mr. Higgins. As he settled into their home, he began to show more of his personality. That became the inspiration for the book series.

In A Home for Mr. Higgins, a lively Scottish terrier longs for a family. But his behavior keeps people from seeing his worth. Higgins finds a home and discovers what it means to be loved and accepted.

In Mr. Higgins Takes a Stand, Higgins is still unsure of himself after finding a loving home. When a pack of dogs bullies his friend, he finds the courage to step in. The story explores bullying, self-confidence and standing up for others.

Mr. Higgins to the Rescue begins with Higgins wondering what it means to be a “rescue dog.” He learns that everyone has different needs and discovers that he can help others too.

In Mr. Higgins Comforts a Family, Higgins faces the loss of his adopted sister Thelma. As he grieves, he learns how sharing his feelings can bring him closer to his family.

Together, the books help young readers understand their feelings and face challenges through a dog’s experiences.
