On August 1st, 2020, Asia Society Texas Center featured our author Dr. Khawaja Azimuddin along with his book, The Boy Refugee. The Society held a Q&A session with the esteemed author in which he dwelt upon his motivation behind writing his memoir, his connections to Houston, and his passion for advocating on behalf of refugees. Responding to the question that what made him tell his story after almost fifty years, he said: “There are now 70 million refugees in the world, and the plight of these refugees is a wakeup call for the civilized world. I wanted to make a little contribution to bring awareness of the refugee crisis, so the time was ripe and I started writing my memoir” The Society also presented reviews of his seminal work by The Book Review Directory and Houston Chronicle. The Boy Refugee is the story of a young boy who finds himself at the crossroads of his fate. This is a poignant tale of pain, despair, tragedy, brutality, oppression, chaos, and paradox of compassion, inspiration, and hope. It documents the events leading to the Civil War, the Indo-Pak War, his escape from Bangladesh, his days and nights in an internment camp set up by the Indian Army in the foothills of the Himalayas and his eventual return to Pakistan. In this memoir, the writer has included his and his family’s experiences, and where needed, has the testimonials of those who witnessed this unfortunate episode firsthand. Dr. Khawaja Azimuddin is a gastrointestinal surgeon based in Houston, Texas. He is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, the American Society of Colon & Rectal Surgeons, and the Royal College of Surgeons of England and Edinburgh. Though a prolific author of many scientific works, The Boy Refugee is his first non-scientific work. Dr. Khawaja is a ceramic tile artist and utilizes his leisure time to promote peace harmony among different communities using his art.
