Our Stock Is Rising

I spent the early years researching the topic. The goal was to teach them as I learned, and to stay one step ahead of my classes. I took them to see the experts at Key Bank and the Wright State University School of Business. As time went on, the experts came to us. The late Ellis Rowe (former VP, Mars, Inc.), and Theo Killion (former CEO, Zales) flew in from Jacksonville and Chicago respectively, just to share a few of their valuable hours for what they both found to be an invaluable experience.

This book is written by a teacher, for teachers. Unlike other books of its kind, this one’s not written by an expert in the field of investment financing. Quite frankly, I saw in this project, such a sense of urgency, that the need for it to be delivered by experts (whenever they became available), was outweighed by the need for it to be delivered in the here and now.

Our Stock Is Rising is a metaphor that speaks not just to the disenfranchised, but to all the little kids in all the neighborhoods outside New York’s famed Financial District. It says that we are not always too young. And that the things we are allowed to be challenged by in our youth, won’t be the things that deny us a place at the table, as adults.

Out of a Dream

Jessica Benjamin, an accomplished family lawyer from Toronto, Canada, embarks on a dream cruise to the Mediterranean with her best friend, Pat. Out of Bounds

Out of Bounds features Montreal women of different ages and cultural backgrounds facing a range of contemporary challenges and adventures at home and in other countries. Indigenous individuals, immigrant women, aging women, victims of domestic violence, addicts, and Holocaust survivors face making difficult choices at dramatic turning points in their lives. The stories are linked partly through one character who appears at key stages of her life, starting when she is sixteen and finishing when she is a retired anthropology professor and meets a fascinating but mysterious man she knew when she was a young reporter. She plays a role in the lives of several women featured in the book.

One of the women, who starts as an accountant and ends up helping poor women in Mexico start small businesses, has a rambling Montreal house where she welcomes women needing a safe place to escape to while making life-changing decisions. Settings include Montreal, Vancouver, and New York, as well as Portugal, Mexico, Antigua, Tunisia, Morocco, Afghanistan, Pakistan, and rural India.

Out Of My Skin

Overcoming Life's Challenges

The author tells his story of being born under the Gemini star sign, living a life defined by an unremitting struggle between the conflicting twins of “Yes, I can” and “No, you can’t!” It describes a struggle of early childhood uncertainty, being hidden as a child, of unanswered questions and preferring to be in the background during his childhood through to his middle years. Generally surrendering to the opinions of others, while holding back on his own views, was the hallmark of his being.

Hesitating to take on challenges was a familiar pattern, as was the likelihood of yielding to mediocracy, the easy way out. Tilting the balance away from “No you can’t” to “Yes, I can … and I will” was the major factor in the author’s life towards holding leadership positions in every sphere of his adult public life, from committee secretary early in his professional career to becoming Cape Town’s first citizen. From the mayoralty to ministry, standing up for justice and the dignity of life and being able to make a difference was the path he chose; mediocracy simply was not good enough.

Owed to My Mother

Owen's Dream

Owen’s Dream profiles the detailed struggles of Owen, a 12-year-old seventh grader diagnosed with autism at the age of four. P is for Pickelhaube

Broken trust. Broken promises. Shame, confusion, and guilt. Unimaginable violence. Then the War came, and the cycle started anew. This is the story of Kurt, a Bavarian infantryman serving somewhere on the Western Front during the First World War. He is like many of his comrades and not a few of his enemies: he fights a war within a war, a singular combat against what he knows of love, hate, sex, addiction, and abuse. A combat against monsters both real and otherwise. Combat in the First World War was a dehumanizing experience.

Gone was glory and individual heroics. Gone too were the fluttering flags and colorful uniforms. Gone was color altogether.

Pacific Musick

January 1938... For two years, Pan American's magnificent Martin M130 flying boats have been safely and routinely carrying passengers from San Francisco to Hong Kong. It's a trip considered by many to be a fairy tale ride through deserted Pacific islands, equipped with luxury hotels and dining facilities. But the corporate expansion continues. New Zealand will be the stepping stone to Australia and Singapore. The Martins can't be spared. The shorter range Sikorsky aircraft will have to be used. As with Hong Kong, this route will be blazed by Pan American’s Chief Pilot, Edwin C. Musick. So perilous is this operation that one fueling stop is made on a tiny atoll, approximately one hundred yards in length. It's barely able to hold the five men shown below. Flight crews will be there overnight, on an ocean-going freighter. On one of these flights, Musick has an engine problem and is faced with a choice. Does he dump fuel to comply with John Leslie's always accurate performance numbers, knowing that could lead to a catastrophic fire? Or does he, this time, just this one time in his life, break with procedure?
