Author:Lee Cherry is the author of The Unique Friendship of Grover and Steve, his first book. He wanted to create a children’s book with the message that regardless of our differences, we can all be friends, and do so in a way that children would understand. Lee attended the University of Central Florida and graduated with a degree in Business Administration. He resides in Florida with his wife and three children.Illustrator: Barbara “Buffie” Biddle is the illustrator of The Unique Friendship of Grover and Steve. She is both an author and illustrator of a variety of children’s books. From an early age, Buffie loved drawing, painting, and making up stories and telling tales. Buffie attended Moore College of Art and Design and graduated from West Chester University with a degree in Fine Art and a minor in Special Education. Buffie resides in Pennsylvania with her family.

    The Unique Friendship of Grover and Steve by Lee Cherry is a fantastic picture book with a powerful lesson about the value of diverse kinds of friendships. The story follows a beautiful friendship between two unique friends: Steve, an ostrich, and Grover who is a donkey. Steve and Grover always meet under the great canopy tree. They play and graze together from sunrise to sunset. Other animals are amazed at their friendship and wonder how such different animals can be friends. Many animals are not accepting of their friendship, but day after day, Grover and Steve continue to meet and their close friendship bond grows. One day, the Plains fall under the attack of a mysterious, destructive predator. The incident teaches the animals the power of friendship and community. Lee Cherry has created a wonderful story with incredible characters whose friendship flourishes amidst the criticism and rejection of the others around them. Steve and Grover could not be more different, but they enjoy each other’s company. When Steve suffers rejection from Grover’s herd, Grover sticks by him. Together, they navigate the challenges of life. Young readers will find the characters colorful, adorable and intriguing. Brilliantly written, the story offers a thought-provoking perspective on friendship and how important diversity is in building healthy, impactful relationships. It simplifies the lesson in a way that children can easily understand and remember.
