The Shout of the Phoenix is the dramatic unraveling suspense story of Angel, a bisexual man who from the initial frame, dies. Before his death, he was a sexual addict who had it all, fame, power, lovers, prestige, and the expectation of a massive inheritance. After his death, and upon being given a second chance at life he ultimately loses it all, falls from grace, and encounters powerful opponents and adverse difficulties that ultimately force him to undergo an internal as well as an external spiritual journey that takes place in New York, India, Africa, and Greece.

Along the way and as a result of his tragic accident and traumatic HIV diagnosis, he fails to remember a very key piece of this intricate puzzle, whose answers lie in a mysterious book that slowly unravels a big reveal for a story that goes back and forward between the present, past and future. Mixed with the search for his true love, posing philosophical questions with the surrounding beautiful scenarios, and in conjunction with his best friend Kathleen’s similar fate, everything comes full circle in the poetic finale.

This story ranges from romance, poetry, drama, and erotica to humor, action, intensity, and philosophical themes, all told from an international POV. Learning about different cultures was my favorite part, India, Greece, and Africa! Not my usual type of story, but glad I gave it a try, as I just could not put it down. From the opening scene to the closing, I was immersed in this very beautiful story. A must-read for fans of true classic literature, in short, it's Eat, Pray, and Love meets Siddhartha, the Alchemist, and Sex and the City. The poems should have been in a separate book. Highly recommend.

I loved this book. The protagonist Angel's fall from grace and road to self-discovery is a beautiful journey. The story itself is very human and relatable, with elements of love and loss, selfishness and sacrifice, and hope and despair. Taveras does an impeccable job of conveying thoughts and emotions; the characters are believable and relatable, and the locations visited throughout the tale are described in immersive detail. The narrative is emotional and serious, but is tempered with philosophy, poetry, introspection, and humor. Themes of fate and destiny being at odds with cold reality made for a compelling story that I could not put down. A great read!
