The drug-peddling business comes with the risk of bodily harm and death, but for the Rey family, the costs of their criminal empire run far deeper. Peace of mind and drug trafficking are two parallel paths that can never intersect. The book "The Assignment" by Shayla C. Freeman tells the story of a doctor named Dr. Savannah Dawson being utilized by the CIA to expose and give vital information about the Rey family, who were primarily based in Spain, information that would hopefully lead to their arrest. Dr. Savannah Dawson had been secretly deployed by the CIA to Barcelona, Spain, in order to get closer to the CIA's main target, Tomas Rey. She soon links up with him, but along the way, she starts developing romantic feelings for him. She could not believe that this same handsome and caring personality was a criminal and a murderer. Savannah's friend, Lacey from the CIA, thinks she's getting too involved with their target and suggests she should be dropped from the case. Savannah is resolute in her quest to dispel the initial perception of Tomas' evil nature, arguing that his father coerced him into the business. But will she succeed? Is Tomas Rey actually against his father's illegal business? Did Savannah eventually end up with Tomas as his partner? The author employs interesting themes in this book, such as the struggle between good and evil. The book dissects moral gray areas and shows how characters like Tomas and Savannah are torn between the desire to do good and the circumstances surrounding them. The theme of second chances and redemption is also evident in this book, as the author raises the question of whether people can actually change for the better and if they deserve forgiveness. Tom's desire to leave the drug business shows an exploration of personal redemption. Another beautiful theme utilized by the author is the theme of sacrifices and selflessness. Savannah is willing to risk everything for her friend Lacey by disguising herself in Spain in order to bring the bad guys to justice. Tomas's willingness to put his life on the line for Savannah also emphasizes this theme. The theme of corruption and the abuse of power is also craftily displayed by the author. The corrupt authorities and the Rey family's criminal empire highlight the dangers of unchecked power and corruption. The majority of the plot is set in Barcelona, Spain. Other places where the plot was set were London, Mexico, and, briefly, Seville. The book is very entertaining and engaging. One of those books you cannot take your eyes off, no matter how tired you are. This book would be recommended to lovers of crime thrillers, anyone looking for a fast-paced book with unexpected twists, and anyone who loves a good story. I'd rate the book 5 out of 5. It had zero errors and nothing to dislike.
