Papayo is a Peruvian puppy who enters each day with excitement as he conquers many adventures with which he is faced. From exploring the Andes Mountains along the Inca Trail, to daily chores on his small village farm; readers get a glimpse into the lives of the free-roaming dogs in South America! Papayo is a real puppy living outside of Cusco, and I had the pleasure of meeting him during my travels to Peru. My own heart felt compelled to share this story since Papayo reminded me so much of my own puppy, Felix, back home in Charlotte, North Carolina. Yet, they lived completely different lives. Children and families of all ages can enjoy the heartfelt tale of Papayo: The Peruvian Puppy.

Emily Eskew resides in the Queen City of Charlotte, NC with her fiancé, Ryan and their two doxie pups, Felix & Yogi. As a native of Virginia, she received her Bachelor's degree in Health Promotion and continued to earn her Masters of Public Health from Virginia Tech - Go Hokies! Her typical day-to-day work is in health and benefits technology in the southeast, but she also enjoys community work as a group exercise instructor for the YMCA. Her spare time is spent jamming to Tom Petty, visiting local wineries, or traveling the world-where she finds much inspiration for children's stories.

Bought this book for my nieces and nephews (ages 7, 4,3,2, 1.5) and they LOVE it. They ask for the “puppy book” at night before bed. Such a fun read and love the real life adventures Emily and Papayo had. Can’t wait to see where Papayo goes next. 5 stars!

One thing I always enjoy seeing in a children’s book is a true story by the author written so that it is relatable for a child. This very enjoyable book is a story about a chance encounter with a friendly puppy while the author was on vacation. The story, along with cute illustrations of the puppy, make the book fun to read. The book is written in a rhyming and rhythmic style, which is very age-appropriate for a young reader. I recently sent a copy of this book to a friend who teaches first grade. She read it to her class the next day, and the students loved it. They all signed a card to thank me for gifting the book. Thank you for such a happy book Emily. I’ll be looking forward to the next one!

As an undergrad Spanish major, I’ve always had an appreciation for South America, Peru included! Now I’m able to share this interest with my 6 nieces and nephews by reading them Papayo: The Peruvian Puppy. It has great illustrations, engaging rhymes, and a fun story for them all to follow! Can’t wait for the next book!
