Thirteen-year-old John Robert O’Neill, better known as Robbie, is a precocious young man with an old soul. Robbie, the younger of two brothers, delights in his special relationship with his grandfather, for whom he is named. Henry, seven years older than Robbie, is completely opposite in demeanor and manner from his younger brother.

The tension between Robbie and Henry is palpable when they first encounter each other in the hospital corridor, where they await news of their grandfather’s stroke.

Indeed, the untimely stroke and resulting loss of speech occur the night before Robbie was to come over after school to learn of a secret Grandpa had never shared with anyone in the family.

Grandpa’s struggle to communicate since the stroke leaves Robbie with few clues and harrowing choices. The puzzle pieces come together with unanticipated twists and turns. Robbie discovers a brother he never quite knew before. Grandpa learns to forgive himself and others. That which is genuinely to be treasured is revealed, not in its price, but its unbreakable bond.

I've been a fan of GB Gurland's work for quite some time and have just finished reading "Orphan's Bond", the author's latest creation. GB Gurland is clearly a master at the craft of infusing fast-paced compelling mystery writing with characters so appealing that it's very hard to put the book down. The blend of fiction and fact, especially in such a readable format, is not only ideal for the adolescent audience for which it is intended, but for all of readers, young and old. It will undeniably provide the perfect platform for great discussions about the various relatable topics. And what a perfect opportunity to have such diverse topics to discuss at the family table ~ the issues faced by our young Robbie and his family and friends will undoubtedly be the source of many wonderful dinner conversations. A mystery that deals with cultural and historical issues while remaining current and is so relatable for today's youth? What a perfect formula for success! Well done, GB. Your fans await your next book!!

  • "Orphan's Bond" is a page-turner!

G.B.Gurland has done it again. After "The Secret Files of Phineas Foster," Gurland has written another exciting and engaging mystery filled with twists and turns, mayhem and turmoil, anticipation and surprises destined to delight young adult readers and their parents. "Orphan's Bond" is a page-turner. Unfolding like a screenplay, the storyline is clear and draws you in from the start. Every chapter ends with the pre-emptive question, “What’s next?” From the point of view of “little bro” Robbie, our 14-year-old sleuth, we’re off and running. He has a forensic bad-boy older brother, Henry, who at first seems to be an obstacle to the proceedings at hand. However, it is the tension between these siblings that brings solutions to the fore as they pursue truth and justice for their grandpa who just had a stroke. Grandpa had something to tell Robbie before his stroke and so the pieces of a puzzle have to be assembled and pursued. New vibrant characters emerge and the plot expands. We have friend and foe, protagonists, and a scoundrel. But it is through the unlikely collaboration of these two brothers that Grandpa is vindicated. From the start, we know that Grandpa’s predicament will be attended to. It’s the journey there that keeps the reader engrossed to the very last page. "Orphan’s Bond" is a hit.

The other day I finished reading 'Orphan's Bond' which really left me excited. This easy read, educational and most importantly engaging book left me wanting to read more of the story day after day. The cliff hangers left me wanting to read more. It was so fun to get to know Robbie and be in his world for a bit. The sentiment between his grandpa, his brother, his friend, his parents - all so recognizable. What I want to highlight too as an amazing gift of this book is the connection to the Second World War. One day our elders will be gone and there will be no more people who lived through that experience. 'Orphan's Bond' does a great job of weaving in such important and precious matters to keep being reminded of. I would highly recommend this book to youngsters and even older people. It is always good to be lost in someone else's story for a bit - you will certainly learn something from it and especially in this sweet book.

GB Gurland has done it again!
