His Place at the Table is about my son Emilio, his cancer diagnosis at three years old, and the rollercoaster ride my husband Richard and I traveled in the attempt to save Emilio’s life. In an instant, upon hearing the profoundly painful words, “your child has cancer,” we took a rapid plunge into the depths of Dante’s inferno, with absolutely no idea how we would ever get through this nightmare.

My book recounts the highs and lows with uncommon honesty. Although my unrelenting optimism and fortitude were challenged beyond limits, I show the reader that love can be a lifeline. I go back in time and speak to my later-in-life opportunity to find meaningful love, marriage, and motherhood. Richard and I were unwavering in our commitment to one another, as grief took us into unchartered territories.

Ultimately, through our spiritual strength and the expansion of our “family” by establishing the Emilio Nares Foundation, we found ways to heal and transform our lives. Emilio’s Legacy continues, as the little boy who inspired a movement.

Diane Nares is the co-founder of the Emilio Nares Foundation, a non-profit charity which provides transportation and other vital support to families who are navigating through their child’s journey with cancer. Nares expresses her passion for life in a wide range of pursuits, from comforting parents who have lost their child, to participating in family bereavement groups, to hosting ENF’s annual food & beverage fundraiser. Born in Los Angeles, Diane Nares is a “self-proclaimed” later-in-life wife and mother to her only child, Emilio. Emilio lost his life to leukemia shortly before his sixth birthday. In addition to being a respected speaker, Nares enjoys traveling internationally, swimming, yoga, cooking, and hiking with her husband, Richard.

This story is Personal and at times heartbreaking, a journey of loss, grief, fear, discovery, love, pain, loyalty, and spiritual questioning. Diane's positivity throughout the book is Inspiring. Life can be daunting and unfair, however Diane and Richard's devotion to one another and in honoring their Child kept their marriage strong and in tact. I would assume in between the tears and emotional breakdowns, they both questioned, God/Universe, Why Us? This book is an ebb and flow of emotions and courage as their commitment was/is to help cancer families who are going through the same heart wrenching experience. Often under these circumstances Marriages can either Thrive or Unwind and clearly this couple joined forces in turning their sorrow into triumph by establishing, The Emilio Nares Foundation in honor of their Son, Emilio.

For anyone who has suffered a profound loss and is stumbling and struggling through their grief, this raw and powerful memoir provides a road map to recovery. For any couple who has shared such a loss and fears for the relationship to survive such tragedy, this beautiful love story inspires and illuminates powerful lessons. Adding suffering on top of suffering, way too small of a percentage of relationships/marriages are able to survive the loss of a young child. By sharing so much of her journey and ultimately out of grief, and by providing so much personal history and texture, she provides such an honest and complete picture that we, the lucky reader, are able to grasp the tools this couple deployed to stay together, to keep their love alive and to find connected and separate ways for each to grieve in their own individual way and for each to contribute so much to other families who face similar challenges. For many of us, we owe Diane Nares a debt of gratitude for having the courage to share this story of love, loss and healing. The beauty and the love in this story of loss shines bright.

Such a touching love story - a love story between the parents and their son and then a love story between husband and wife. I appreciated the author being so forthcoming with her heartbreaking story about dealing with her grief. I wish I had known Emilio during his short but impactful life but I do drive down Emilio's Alley on a daily basis and feel his joyful spirit. The author's quote from News Anchor Diane Sawyer said it so well: "In the broken places, the light can still shine through. Hope and possibility, the cure in overcoming sadness, is in caring about other people." Even if you don't read this book, do go to the website www.enfhope.org and see what an impact Emilio and this organization has made in the lives of so many families ... truly caring about other people!

This is an inspirational story of parents, Diane and Richard Nares, placed in the worst possible situation: their only child, Emilio, diagnosed with leukemia, and the devastation that comes with such a diagnosis. Diane weaves the reader so eloquently in the storytelling, revealing her most basic fears and thoughts as she and Richard slowly watch as the disease takes their very reason for living, their son Emilio, away from them. It is also a thoughtful story that reminds us once again that life truly is a gift. Diane accentuates the point that every moment we have in this world must be revered and appreciated. There is so much beauty in everyday life, one must just look around and take it all in every chance possible. In Emilio’s shortened life, he embraced this approach daily. Mrs. Nares has written a very emotional and heart-wrenching story for us to appreciate and better understand how special Emilio was, while also providing an inspirational reminder that each of us needs to stay in the moment, and face life’s obstacles as challenges to meet head on and overcome. Such challenges often make-up the fabric of life’s quilt, ultimately bringing further appreciation to our own lives. Thank you to Diane and Richard, and most importantly, to Emilio, for reminding us through their story to rise to these challenges every day.
