This book is a stunning debut collection of versatility, authenticity, and intense expression alongside wondrous nature, hope, light, and indomitable human spirit. It captivates the reader as the emotion that drives the work is deeply evocative and transportive in the informality, simplicity, and spontaneity of the authorial voice. The authorial voice is transfixing, as it offers a unique perspective through the haiku format, and it remains tenacious to tackle the topics that most profoundly strike at the core of what it means to be human. Each layer of the collection further engrosses the reader, and each poem builds upon the other to create a tumultuous, poignant, and restorative narrative. This book stands out with its empowering, unfiltered, contemplative perspective and attests to the unceasing beauty and simple truth embodied by nature.

Guohua Li is the Mieczyslaw Finster Professor of Epidemiology at Columbia University and recipient of the Kenneth Rothman Epidemiology Prize and Guggenheim Fellowship. At first, the haiku in Gorman Ponds seemed like simple, charming nature studies. But as I read them, jumping in randomly here and there, I began to see that this pond was more than just a shallow puddle. Themes of marriage and family repeatedly rise to the surface, so the scene becomes domestic. The use of vocabulary, words that seem puzzling are like random little noises that intrude, waking you gently from your normal stream of thought. Over time, these poems add up to be a personal statement, modest but consistently self-aware. A joy to read.

"Gorman Ponds" is a truly special collection. Each poem is a snapshot—a personal, intimate moment of observation that captures something beautiful and profound in the natural world. This isn't just poetry about nature; it's a series of heartfelt reflections that allow you to see the world through the author's eyes. It’s a beautiful, meditative, and deeply personal journey that will stay with you long after you finish the last page.

In this haiku journal, which gives poetic form to the author's daily experiences on nature walks around nearby ponds, one is invited to share moments of inspiration, connection, and catharsis found in familiar beauty. Dr. Li's poetry, rich with meaning and pleasure, is not to be missed.

In a handful of syllables, I am offered clarity, intimacy, magical encounters, and new perspectives: In the dark, a hiker steps into an orb web, “stunning” its tiny architect. I want to linger over every entry, but this haiku journal is compulsively readable. It is a marvelous gift to the nature lover, as it is devoted to majestic quiet moments that unfold through the seasons at Gorman Ponds, but it also contains striking notes on current events and whispers of human suffering. I am delighted by this book’s invitations to inhale each one.

Reading Gorman Ponds brought tears to my eyes. Each day for a year. the author visited these ponds near his home and found a new subject for a haiku that captured the spirit of that moment. The collection is a treasure that will enrich your life.
