Russell James Ray is credited with the first canyoneering descents of the Barrancas Sinforosa and Batopilas. It was an endeavor that spanned several years, and included a self-delusional non-first descent of the Barranca Del Cobre. He currently resides in Santa Fe, New Mexico, where he dreams of other things.

Russell James Ray is an Early Childhood Educator living in Santa Fe, New Mexico, where he is a single father and striving artist interested in all manners of coupling intellectual thoughts with physical pursuits. Mountain climbing and canoeing are his favorite physical diversions from Scientific musings. For him the world is a mysterious place of wonder where he likes to immerse his spiritual and corporeal self.

An intricately woven tale, Canyons of the Mind does a fascinating job of presenting what Russel Ray was able to achieve. It is a deeply emotional and personal tale at times. And at times, Russel Ray stops to posit his profound philosophy. Through the ups and downs, you are journeying the canyons of his mind.

Russ has created a work of considerable depth and interest, even if one is not experienced at Canyoning. The juxtaposition between his innermost thoughts portraying his daily feelings and the almost chronological description of the group's experiences make for an altogether mesmerising experience. I can safely say, hand on heart that you ( The consumer) will have never read a book like this before. Therefore and without any hesitation I would recommend this to anyone, it is a must-read and should be included in any home library.

Canyons of the Mind is as much a journey of the author’s mind as it is a narrated journey through the canyons he explores. I was, until reading, unaware of the Green Bomber, or that anything like it existed, interrupting the fauna of our natural world. Russell James Ray describes the dichotomy of such threats with the tranquility of the canyons. The canyoneer navigates the passages through perilous rock much like the author is navigating the physical and mental terrain of his journey, appropriately punctuated with various substances along the way. Not unlike the slot canyons with their narrow passages, the author’s journey is inundated with narrow misses and rare opportunities (like meeting his future wife in a chance encounter) met during his well-documented travels. Canyons of the Mind will have you longing for the stamina of youth as well as its unconstrained freedom. Until such time, open the book and prepare for an arduous yet satisfying journey that is Canyons of the Mind.
