In McCoy’s debut picture book, a young goat relates its sedentary life on a Californian ranch.
Apollo is an Angora goat, depicted on the cover as a silky-eared kid with horn buds, but thereafter as a fully grown, long-horned adult. Apollo lives on a Californian ranch alongside many other goats, as well as dogs, chickens, and pigs (albeit only the goats and one dog are shown). Apollo and the other goats have a haircut twice a year, relieving them of their heavy coats. They’re fed in the morning and spend most of the afternoon napping (goats live a quiet life!).
Ranch dogs protect them from mountain lions and coyotes, the one guardian portrayed being an exquisitely groomed white-gray sheepdog that rests cloudlike in the long grass. At night, the goats sleep in a big red barn. McCoy narrates from Apollo’s perspective, the text presented on pastel-colored facing pages across from each full-page illustration. These uncredited pictures beautifully convey a sense of nature and serenity: from the tangled grass and wonky fence line, through gray skies and silhouetted, leafless trees, to the life-affirming, isolated shelter of the big red shed. While there isn’t much story here, and scenes of goats can only offer so much variety, the book’s only real shortcoming is its brevity: a mere five full scenes plus a reprise page. Young readers will be quickly immersed but just as quickly find themselves at the end of the experience. A slim, lushly illustrated volume that will leave readers wanting more.
