
Trauma, Class, and the Nation's Divide – a Psychology Today film review by Dr. Lloyd Sederer
Author Dr. Lloyd Sederer’s article Trauma, Class, and the Nation’s Divide was featured by Psychology Today. The article highlighted the fissures in modern American society among those who are not employed and children who are being brought up in households with little education, and psychological trauma. Sederer talks about the decade-old film, Out of the Blue starring Dennis Hopper, “Out Of The Blue (1980), foreshadows today’s opioid epidemic, the “deaths of despair”, and the “white rage” propelling our nation’s divide.”
Ink-Stained for Life shares childhood tales and stories of the author while growing up in a Jewish family in the 1950s. Sederer shares first-person essays and stories about getting into mischief, running away from home, and realizing the American Dream. From the age of 8 to 17, Sederer narrates his story as a family man, a public health doctor and psychiatrist after more than fifty years.
Dr. Lloyd Sederer, MD, is an Associate Professor at the Columbia University of Public Health. He has published seven books for professional audiences and Ink-Stained for Life is his sixth book for general readers. He has published 500 articles in medical journals, non-medical publications, and book and film reviews. He was the medical editor for Mental health for seven years at HuffPost and has taught medical writing at Columbia Medical School. In 2013 he was awarded the Irma Bland for Excellence in Teaching Residents by the American Psychiatric Association. He was given the Exemplary Psychiatrist Award from the National Alliance on Mental Illness and in 2019, received the Doctor of the Year Award from the National Council on Behavioural Healthcare.
