This Is What They Call Teenage Angst

Struggles faced by teenagers and young adults are still struggles; they are not phases or trends. Sweeping emotions and experiences under a rug of nonchalance further ostracizes young people and it is unhealthy to do this. All emotions and experiences are valid. A person’s age should not influence whether or not we take what it is someone is going through seriously. We project this lie as a society: that if someone is truly struggling there would be major signs highlighting the fact that they are close to breakdown; but how would you know the signs if you don’t listen? How could you be able to identify the signs if you don’t pay attention? It’s not going to be written on someone’s forehead that they are experiencing negative emotions, and they won’t yell it at you over the noise of your ignorance. It’s time that we, as a society, stop belittling and invalidating other’s experiences as a way to keep ourselves comfortable. It’s time we look each other in the eye and say that we are not alone. You are not alone.

Three Weeks, a Lie

My brothers Al, Bob, and I witnessed our mom carried and dragged past us by men in white as we huddled against our living room wall. Dad arranged for Mom to be confined to a mental facility. He didn’t bother considering to soften our confusion by explaining Mom was sick or where she was being taken. Shortly afterward, Dad had us transferred to a “special school” for three weeks. Actually, we were transferred to an orphanage. Again, he didn’t bother preparing us for what was ahead of us; the least of which was the absence of family influences. Our mom endured eleven years in a mental facility. We endured eight and a half years in an orphanage. As if that wasn’t enough, Dad followed up a few years later telling us that Mom was gone. A lie. What would prompt any father, for no known reason, to elect to separate a family without explanation for his actions? Years of silence from him and family members failed to provide reasons other than “self-serving” on his part. The years separating Mom from us took its toll on the four of us. Separation, isolation, guilt, anger, loneliness, and adjustment were new experiences for the four of us to deal with.

Torrential Rains

My mother was worried sick about me. She thought it would be a good idea for my brother Johnny to come and stay with me and Louis. She believed that Johnny would be able to protect me. I felt a little safer with Johnny there even though I still cried myself to sleep every night. One day Johnny told me he was leaving and going back to Gary. Instantly, I felt the fear rushing back into my body. He must’ve gotten into it with Louis. Johnny said he couldn’t stay there because Louis had a bad attitude.

My children don’t often ask me about their father. Maybe it’s because they’re grown now, and they somehow knew not to ask when they were younger. I did love him. And my children are here because of him. I’m thankful that God saved me and preserved my life in order for me to take care of my children. Maybe I forgave him because of them.

I am a very blessed woman. Throughout my life, I have had some spiritual experiences. With some of these experiences, I didn't even know what they were until I became older.
