This book not only demonstrates the problems and stressors common with the illness called schizophrenia but also highlights methods, techniques, and useful solutions to some of the most challenging and slippery mental conundrums that one might encounter during psychosis.

Odyssey of a Street

The Cardo book is a thriller intended for the lecture of students passionate about architecture, archaeology, and history that challenges and teaches. It is a provocation to confront riddles of town planning and history that lie in front of us, but one didn’t dare to “lift the glove’.

When an ancient game was discovered chiseled on one of the Cardo pavement stones, it was only the start of a whodunit. Only more archaeological diggings (11 pits on the 180-meter length of the street) brought up the solution three years later.

But why didn’t the archaeologists find any Roman remnants?

Here we direct the stage limelight on Justinianus, emperor of Byzantium, an ebullient personality and passionate builder.

The mistrust of the archaeologists in the vision of the architects dissipated, and it turned out to be a fruitful collaboration that went on for 12 years: a real odyssey of a discovery.

The book, which is richly illustrated and narrated by the leader of a team of architects that won the first prize in a national competition for the renewal of a part of the Jewish Quarter in 1971, teaches not only historical periods of the developments of Jerusalem through the ages but also touches on the architectural dilemmas of how to rebuild and integrate into part of the historical city of Jerusalem after the Six-Day War period.

Thoughts Expressed Through the Written Word

This literary work is the product of my personal activity in the effort of lifelong self-expression. Self-expression can be accomplished through a number of manners, including all forms of art, music and performance. My form of expression is through the written word. As I experience the varied performance arts of others, I appreciate the message and communication of the artist and ultimately experience self-growth.  Some individuals are driven to self-identify and as Dale Carnegie stated, “Self-expression is the dominant necessity of human nature.” I started writing when I was twelve years old.

This work expresses the intellectual, emotional, and personal growth I have experienced over a period of fifty-five years. As stated by Oprah Winfrey, “If we’re really committed to growth, we never stop discovering new dimensions of self and self-expression”. My two previous literary works, Grinnin’ Like a Jenny Eatin’ Saw Briars and Let Me Tell You a Story, published by Austin Macauley involve the communication of events and experiences in my life. As stated by Pearl S. Buck, “Self-expression must pass into communication for its fulfilment”. For this reason, I have chosen to fulfil my literary work through the writing and publication of this book.

Growth, Modernity and the Nations of Wealth

Eric Humphrey and Dwight Semler present a new theory explaining the mysterious historical emergence of modern economic growth and its even more baffling offspring, modernity. Noticeable changes in material life began less than three centuries ago, but previous theoretical accounts have failed to explain their arrival. Thinkers assumed modern wealth and morality were the universal standard driving human history. They assumed modern rights and riches were natural and normal. In this way they thought of such things as ends rooted in human nature, rather than deriving them as consequences from a historical, nonmodern baseline. Misdirected, they set out to liberate the imprisoned modern homunculus who “caused modernity” through moral education and economic institutions. Modernity became an “awareness problem.” Yet this high-maintenance modern self and its ever-growing needs are a consequence of modern processes rather than their cause. Consequently, theorists of the modern world produced comically omnipotent notions of human agency. Marxists and developmental economists saw modernity as a moral or material self-realization project, requiring only a liberator or engineer. But when their God-of-Genesis model failed the facts, they overreacted and defaulted to its alter ego—humans were passive leaves in the wind of history. Modernity thus oscillates between a chosen destiny and a given fate. With modernity represented as a historical fate, all pretense of a grand theoretical view vanishes in thick description of one damn thing after another, and the historian’s rote chronology replaces any theoretical causality, as a specific description of a particular falling rock replaces a general theory of gravity.

Understanding the modern world and how it came to be, argue the authors, is less a matter of facts than of the foundational assumptions used to link facts together into robust and coherent theories. We must un-assume our modern selves and give poverty and illiberality their just historical due. With better and more scientifically consistent assumptions, they argue, the old facts of history can be seen in a new way. Then the solution to understanding the most puzzling and abnormal of human events, the modern world itself, turns out to be hiding in plain sight.

Ibn Khaldun’s Ilmual-Umran Pioneering Paradigm in the World Pyramids of Social Sciences

The author of this book has a sociological imagination that has made him consider the huge world volume of social sciences like several pyramids built through the ages, where Ibn Khaldun inaugurated the building of the first pyramid in his famous book, The Muqaddimah. Ibn Khaldun’s innovative social science work is the outcome of multiple factors, among which are his creative personality that allowed him to perceive and capture the dynamics of latent and manifest features of Muslim societies, particularly in North Africa, which other scholars failed to do.

Furthermore, his scholarly vision had set his path to achieve great success in being the social science pioneer in the entire world. He had a critical view of Arab Muslim historiography: Arab and Muslim historians had pitfalls in their methodology and in the analysis of historical events. In the views of Ibn Khaldun and Thomas Kuhn, their works were hardly credible. Thus, there was a pressing need to solve the Arab Muslim historiography’s crisis. The Muqaddimah’s new sociological perspective, according to both Yves Lacoste and Arnold Toynbee, is an exceptional intellectual piece of work. Professor Dhaouadi believes that The Muqaddimah constitutes a new paradigm to meet that crisis.

In Kuhn’s terms, The Muqaddimah sets the pace for reforming the science of Arab Muslim Historiography by shifting from what Kuhn calls normal science to revolutionary science. Ibn Khaldun’s sociological approach is inclusive (it stresses the influence of both latent and manifest factors in shaping society and individual behaviours); he was unlike Positivist contemporary social scientists, who give prominent role to manifest factors. They are rather exclusive social scientists. One may claim that The Muqaddimah has revolutionized the relation between the disciplines of history and sociology in North Africa and the Arab Muslim world by affirming that ‘good historians must be first of all good sociologists.’

Life Threads – A Memoir

The core of this illuminating memoir consists of threads of consistency and learning that have emerged through Carol’s life experiences. I was destined to be a peacemaker. Doesn’t every family have one?

My family, with its traditional values, loving grandparents, and family heirlooms, has always provided a comfortable base and a home. My expectations were that my home and family would be safe, cozy, and unwavering.

What of words translated by a peacemaker, certain it was for me too? No protests, make a loving family, keep the peace. I was convinced it would be mine.

What of words from love, prideful of my values, celebrating my accomplishments, joyful for my happiness, and hopeful for my future?

Seasons change, years pass. I remember joyous moments of splendid solace with so much hopeful anticipation. I’ve learned one can search for serendipity, but it cannot be contrived. I remain hopeful beyond possibility.

What of words of hurtful intention—stinging, humiliating, torturous, and demeaning, as intended?

I am the peacemaker.

I must not be defeated.

The Timkens of San Diego

Rising from a blacksmith’s apprentice to become king of the roller bearing, Henry Timken was one of the 19^th century’s greatest inventors.

His early engineering of axles, springs, and ball bearings for horse-drawn carriages made him rich. But his 1898 patent of a tapered roller bearing revolutionized transportation and made the German immigrant and his family uber rich.

In 1887, with his greatest invention still ahead of him, Timken retired to San Diego with his wife, Fredericka, and four of their five children. All would become wealthy from his patents and lead lives that often cast them in the nation’s headlines.

The three daughters made their niche in the art world.

Amelia founded the San Diego Museum of Art and resuscitated the symphony. Georgia studied art in Paris and St. Louis and married her art teacher. Eight of her paintings hang in the National Gallery of Art.

Cora became an ardent painter and a major collector of art from Persia, China, and India. The Metropolitan Museum of Art lists 133 objects from her. At age 47 she married an osteopathic doctor-scientist 15 years younger who was obsessed with the idea of curing illnesses through electromagnetism.

The sons, H.H. and W.R., took turns running the Timken empire and expanding it globally. H.H. became one of the wealthiest men in America.
