Life was smooth sailing and quite normal up until my mom Janis was killed in a car accident heading from Santa Cruz California to Carmel when I was 11 years old. After her death, life changed drastically from a nice gentle breeze to a category five tornado; an inferno of drugs, lies and alibis. Let’s just say… No more smooth sailing. When the dust began to settle at the age of 24, I enlisted in the United States Navy and set sail for a better life and once again it was smooth sailing.

Here are some of my experiences, thoughts, and photographs of my artwork which I use as a way to process my childhood traumas.

Processing as I stack stones and transfer the negative energy into a beautiful piece of work giving it life; it lives then eventually dies, taking the negative energy with it.

I hope you feel something from these pages within.

Scribbles

Scribbles is a collection of poems written to express feelings that come with intense love, anger, betrayal, trauma, confusion, trust, and worry, and to help make sense of things.

Its goal is to shine a light on some thoughts and feelings one may be having when experiencing the worry for a friend’s death, death of a lover, falling in love, or being betrayed, or being abused, trying to figure out one’s own mind, or feeling as though one has lost their mind.

It is gritty and emotional, even lurid at times, but serves its purpose of letting out what cannot be contained.

Music is something that, especially today, forms the background of our lives. We hear it daily. We feel it weaving the tapestry that we live our lives upon. Sermons in Dust

At some point, I realized what most of us seek in life is false, including what a man makes a priority. The things that he pursues often lead to nothing more than emptiness in his heart. Constantly, his actions swing him back and forth between right and wrong. Happiness often flees from him, and peace is only a daydream. It all comes back again in a cycle that never ends. A man will often blame the world for his problems, but he refuses to look inside himself, though deep down he knows that he is the cause of much of his tragedy. The world may not be to blame. The world is only what it is.

I had God, but a church was something that I knew little of, often only driving past a vacant building on a day it was not in session. But I do respect it. My faith was found in the forests and streams that I spent most of my Sundays in, drawing inspiration from my experiences there. But where I truly realized the power of God’s wisdom was in the fire itself, where selfishness, lies, and the deceit that we all encounter pervade, almost to the point where it chokes the very breath out of us. Friends may really be enemies, as our trust is lost in those who once held all of it. I knew I had to find trust in something else: a power that was above man’s pettiness, something that could transcend our arrogance and pride.

My life is half over, but I may have finally figured out how to live it, as I tried to write these words.
