Most parents start reading books to their children around two years old. At first, the characters tend to be imaginary or fanciful, encouraging virtues like sharing and tolerance. As reading skills advance, many kids gravitate toward more complicated, mystical stories over grounded tales. In my paediatric practice, I became convinced that reading content significantly impacts child development.

As I’ve seen with my grandchildren, reading shifts from fantasy to supernatural the older kids get, with less attention on relatable characters and environments. In writing Buto Meets His Famous Grandmother, I hope to bridge imaginative early reading to sophisticated young adult habits. The story features realistic figures for children to connect with as they transition into more complex fiction. All through the years of my paediatric practice, I was, and as I am now convinced the proper content of reading material plays an important role in children’s education and development.

Close Friends' Cathedral Adventure

Peat, a toad, and Paul-Paulette, an earthworm, live in the woods beneath the roots of their friend, Christy, a Christmas fern. One day they are dug up and carried away. Christy is replanted in a pot large enough to hold Paul-Paulette, but Peat is too big to get in and cannot completely hide. He stays under Christy’s fronds, but can’t disappear.

Together with their wild flower friends, they are taken to the Washington National Cathedral to participate in the annual Festival of Flowers. While the plants are being carried into the cathedral, Peat is discovered, picked up and left in the Garth – the small, enclosed garden near the base of the stairs.

She decided to name one of the spiders Earl, and her family giggled about him all throughout the Christmas season. A story was born and a tradition of accepting the spiders was found in Earl: The Christmas Tree Spider.

This story takes you through Earl’s journey from the forest to a loving home he gets to call his own. With Christmas cheer throughout, and even Santa Claus, this book brings the warmth of the season home to its readers.

Humphrey the Hippo and the Search for Milk

Deep in the mud pools and jungle forests of Hippoland lives Humphrey the Hippo. He is usually quite carefree compared to other hippos (who can be a bit grumpy at times). But one afternoon, he finds he is faced with a puzzle. Humphrey and his brother Harold are determined to make a cup of tea. But try as they might, they cannot find a key ingredient: milk.

So, they decide to consult their friend, Wilberforce the Wizard, for he knows everything. About Mr. Higgins:

In 2014, the authors David Preece and Jim Webber adopted a black Scottish terrier who was a shy, nervous, and somewhat suspicious mid-life rescue dog. “Mr. Higgins” (the fitting name he came to us with) gradually emerged from his shell and enjoyed his new life in his forever home. Still, on guard with most strangers, Mr. Higgins learned to return love while protecting his home and keeping his dads to their daily routines. Not a fan of pats on the head, “Higgins” prefers a light touch on his sides and burrowing into a safe space. He loves walks, other dogs, treats, and – as a born outfielder – plays fetch.
