The Adventures of Lucky and Bud: The Pursuit

This sequel to The Adventures of Lucky and Bud: The Rescue finds the boys at the center of a mystery when their chipmunk cousins’ winter food cache is robbed, and the mischievous pair, who have a reputation for raiding bird feeders, eating flower bulbs, and stealing corn cobs and tomatoes from Mr. Pickles’ vegetable garden, become suspects. To clear their names, find the real thief and, hopefully, recover the stolen food, they lead a search with help from their friends and other animals in their neighborhood to hunt for clues in what turns out to be a thrilling and, at times, risky, pursuit.

Along the way, the amateur detectives learn about the importance of friendship and loyalty, as well as the problems that can arise from prejudging others without knowing all the facts or shunning those who look different or come from unfamiliar places.

This story is written for younger children to highlight the environmental changes that could impact their activities, reassure them, and relieve their anxiety and fear. These changes not only disrupt their daily routines, but may also require them to temporarily take shelter in places other than their family homes for safety. The sudden changes also put other living species close to us in harm’s way. It is documented that these creatures also recognize the danger of being caught in a storm and wind. They seek refuge in tall trees and return to their homes and nests after the storm passes.

In writing this short story, I have emphasized that, regardless of whether a creature is a predator or prey, when both face a common threat such as a storm, they share resources and accommodate each other to overcome the danger – just as we do by helping friends and neighbors during natural disasters.

Chloe, a smart and adventurous girl, is just back from an imaginary secret mission with her best four-legged friend, George. Chloe had known George all her life, and he was the world’s most amazing super pup. One day, the world’s most amazing super pup started to slow down and ultimately had to say goodbye to Chloe. The world would never be the same for Chloe, or so she thought.

Through a series of events, Chloe gets thrown into the paws of a small scraggly and incredibly loud ball of matted fur, named Sophie. Although apprehensive and reluctant to make a new friend, Chloe’s life was about to change forever, Sophie would make sure of it.
