We are not born feeling shamed or rejected; we acquire those corrosive feelings through the actions of others. The source of my shame was not adoption itself but the choices others made, telling lies and keeping secrets from me. People are surprised when I say how ashamed I was to be adopted, in spite of the unwavering love of my parents. Yes, I was loved, but that didn’t erase my need to know the truth. As each thread of truth was uncovered, the story of my life became more coherent. Shame, confusion, and anger resolved to understanding and acceptance.

Hieronymus is a fiction novel about the life and work of the iconic painter Hieronymus Bosch, which preserves the historical context of the dark end of the Middle Ages in Northern Europe.

Based on the little historical information about the artist’s life, the novel tries to dissect the context in which Bosch’s imagination incorporated the sacred and the profane, the symbol and the metaphor, around which the dramatic life of the creator revolves.

Some documented facts of Bosch’s life regarding his marriage to a wealthy woman whose dowry allowed him the freedom of creation, or his survival of a plague epidemic and the great fire of 1463 in 's-Hertogenbosch, are mentioned in the novel to identify the artist’s personality and recreate the social and historical context of the western European Middle Ages, haunted by the fear of the Inquisition and religious reform. The artist immerses in the creation process in which the factual circumstances disappear and re-emerge into his artistic universe populated by fantastic characters, grotesque situations, tortures and suffering, that evaporates at the end of the story like a nightmare in the morning light.

His Place at the Table

His Place at the Table is about my son Emilio, his cancer diagnosis at three years old, and the rollercoaster ride my husband Richard and I traveled in the attempt to save Emilio’s life. In an instant, upon hearing the profoundly painful words, “your child has cancer,” we took a rapid plunge into the depths of Dante’s inferno, with absolutely no idea how we would ever get through this nightmare.

My book recounts the highs and lows with uncommon honesty. Although my unrelenting optimism and fortitude were challenged beyond limits, I show the reader that love can be a lifeline. I go back in time and speak to my later-in-life opportunity to find meaningful love, marriage, and motherhood. Richard and I were unwavering in our commitment to one another, as grief took us into unchartered territories.

Ultimately, through our spiritual strength and the expansion of our “family” by establishing the Emilio Nares Foundation, we found ways to heal and transform our lives. Emilio’s Legacy continues, as the little boy who inspired a movement.
