Marauding lions threatening the safety of early settlers in Rhodesia travelling by ox wagon were the order of the day.

Emma Bartlett, a young, petulant lady of aristocratic birth, followed Harold Watson, second son of the Earl of Adiston, whom she loved, when he left England to settle in Rhodesia.

Emma had to face hardship and trauma, but she was destined to become a formidable woman of strong character setting an example to the generations who followed.

M J Stander is a widow with four married children, grand- and great-grandchildren. She was born and grew up in Zimbabwe’s farming community and was married to a farmer for 53 years. She now lives in a retirement complex where she enjoys the opportunity to write her stories and participate in community activities.

This book by Marietjie Stander paints a fascinating and wonderful picture of what life was like for the early settlers in Rhodesia in a farming community, in a land which was so completely different from what they had come from. It was a land that was vast, primitive, and where they had to find solutions to problems that were new and unexpected. She gives a very realistic portrait of the development of a farming community and how important and necessary it was to help and support one another to survive. It is an excellent story with vivid, believable characters, so that you are drawn into them and their lives, and want to know what happens to them. It covers a long time. So we see how the characters interact, develop, and how life in Rhodesia changes. I thoroughly enjoyed it and couldn't put it down.
