Living in one of the border states, he favored the National Park along the Canadian border for his outdoor activities. The park offered him the opportunity to hike and see wildlife, large and small. For the hiker, visiting this park was an annual ritual for rest, and it provided the perfect setting for his favorite outdoor sport: fly fishing and hiking.
Over the years, the Hiker had noticed significant real estate developments, condos, and multiple campgrounds not far from the park, leading to encroachment and reduction of adequate natural land for wildlife habitats. These changes have altered the landscape surrounding his favorite outdoor park for a retreat.
During his hike to the park, he witnessed a mama bear and her cubs for the first time. The cubs were in the creek, playing and learning to swim in its deep water. Rather than staying close to her young cubs to ensure their safety, the mama bear was preoccupied with eating human waste from a discarded trash bag.
This encounter left a profound impression on him regarding the bear’s addiction to human food. The sight of the black bear choosing human garbage over protecting her cubs highlighted the detrimental effects of human food addiction on wildlife behavior.
