Dr. David Reynolds, a young American vascular surgeon, receives an invitation to practice surgery in Saudi Arabia in the late 1970s. His only hesitation is his Jewish background, even though he changed his name and stopped practicing Judaism 22 years ago. When he travels there and meets Jamila, the vibrant nurse who will be part of his surgical team, his reservations vanish. She is a Saudi princess and her father is powerful in the Kingdom, but she and David fall deeply in love. David converts to Islam to marry Jamila. After their marriage, when David’s true background is revealed, Jamila’s father feels profoundly betrayed and humiliated in front of the royal family. He sends an assassin after the couple who must flee for their lives. Will their love withstand all the severe tests they must face?

I just finished reading the fascinating novel by Dr. Bruce Robinson, The Sword, and the Scalpel. Once I started reading I couldn't put it down. Although this is a novel, I learned a great deal about the Saudi culture from someone who has spent time there as a surgeon. This is an awesome thriller that made you feel like you were there! This is a great read that flows very well.

This book puts sophistication into the normal romance story, taking a vascular surgeon to Saudi Arabia to find far more than he bargained for. The author writes about geographical sites and cultural ways that exist on 3 different continents, and it's obvious he is well-familiar with each place. He understands the terms and methods involved in his protagonist's occupation because that was his occupation. There will be no catching errors on these points. I particularly enjoyed the fast-paced ending conflict. A fun read that teaches while it entertains.
