A raindrop and a bubble decide to switch places, thinking they would enjoy themselves more by being able to do all the things the other could do. At first, it’s exciting and new, but after a while, it wasn’t the same. Through their journey, they both learn a valuable lesson in self-discovery: “Be the best you that you can best be!” With its positive message, it’s Aesop meets Dr. Seuss: A cross between a classic fable and an illustrated nursery rhyme with delightful characters that jump off the page thanks to the colorful artwork.

Well-known as a founding member of Illinois-based guitar rockers The Flyin’ Ryan Brothers, as well as for his TV soundtrack and solo work, the multi-talented Jimmy Ryan released Astral Café, one of the great guitar albums of 2021. In another happy development in 2021, Jimmy Ryan also wrote a one-of-a-kind picture book for children with his daughter, artist and illustrator Julie Ann Voigt. The 45-page book, entitled The Raindrop and The Bubble, is a kind of ‘Aesop meets Dr. Seuss’ picture book that serves as an inspiring modern-day fable. With Jimmy’s uplifting message perfectly complemented by the colorful watercolor artwork of Ms. Voigt, The Raindrop and The Bubble offers a valuable lesson in self-discovery for children – to be the best they can be and to be happy and thankful just to be themselves. The Raindrop and The Bubble sends out messages of hope, filling the readers with positivity and good vibes. In the Covid era, when kids are constantly being bombarded with scary imagery, The Raindrop and The Bubble provides a cheerful and upbeat message for kids of all ages. It’s well worth cheering the fabulous illustrations by Jimmy’s daughter Julie Ann Voigt, herself an elementary school art teacher in Park Ridge, Illinois. Complementing the book’s timeless message of hope, the transcendently beautiful watercolor paintings by Julie Ann are amazing, and perfectly captures the spirit of her father’s storyline. I can’t think of a more wonderful book for children of all age groups than The Raindrop and The Bubble. Children will benefit from the hopeful messages in the book, while adults will marvel at the imaginative paintings and just might pick up a few tips on regaining their own sense of childlike wonder and a renewed sense of self in the process.
