“As in his earlier novel, The Players Brain, Love and Soccer, Antonio exercises his natural gift of translating hermetic neuroscientific concepts into colloquial language without belittling them for the sake of simplicity. Readers will be taken to the edge where fiction meets reality, pointing to the infinite possibilities now within our reach to give life back to legions of people who have lost all hope and, worse, their dignity. The Musician’s Brain is an ode to music, faith, and creativity.”

– Dr. Ricardo de Oliveira.

Maestro João Carlos Martins demonstrates resilience and a deep love for music throughout his more than 70-year career as a successful musician, sharing his journey of overcoming Musician’s Dystonia.

Antônio De Salles, M.D., Ph.D., lives in Brazil. Fascinated by brain function during his medical school years, he learned how to improve it at the Medical College of Virginia, Harvard University, and Umeå University in Sweden. He became a world-renowned neurosurgeon and neuroscientist, eventually becoming an Emeritus Professor at UCLA. He writes to raise awareness of state-of-the-art brain surgery. His novel, Why Fly over the Cuckoo’s Nest? Psychosurgery in My Brain, Please!, is already a success in four languages, with the second edition entitled The Brain of the Player, Love and Soccer. Now the story continues with The Musician’s Brain: Science and Sensibility, bringing more information about brain function and the intricacies of deep brain electrical stimulation with pacemakers to improve human life. The reader leisurely learns about the brain’s underpinnings and the ethical dilemmas of its modification. Resilience through love for music, science, and loyalty to patients needing medical care immerses the reader in the acumen achieved by health professionals and dedicated musicians with their art.
