The arrival of fall is a very special time of the year with lots of fun activities. Outside, we have crisp weather and vibrant colors as the leaves change and drop to the ground. Inside, we have a warm, cozy, and inviting kitchen. The excitement builds as winter approaches, bringing snow and Christmas holiday festivities with the scent of holiday candles and baking mingling in the air. As the year ends, and a new one approaches, we look forward to a fresh beginning. We have much to be thankful for throughout the year: let's look at a few of the reasons.

Jana Oriana Young grew up in Charlottesville, VA. She graduated from the University of Southern California with a Bachelor of Arts degree. She lived in Southern California for 30 years before returning to Virginia. She has a paralegal certificate and is happily working in the legal arena in Richmond, VA. She enjoys reading, writing, singing, surfing the web, and spending time with family and friends.

As a collector of works for children I am always looking for things new and different for my library or to give as gifts. “Thankful For . . .” by Jana Oriana Young does not disappoint! A colorful picture book, Thankful For tells a delightful story with examples of the many gifts for which we have to be thankful. Its characters are culturally diverse, colorful and are like rays of sunshine for the reader. Young has done a great job creating a real world populated with all kinds of people at different stages and ages enjoying real world activities. The book is actually a poem which shows the results of yearlong preparation and planning, bringing us to the last four months of the year where we enjoy a bountiful harvest, seasonal gatherings and holiday festivals. Optimism for the new year is apparent, and at the end of the book, the author cites scriptural references. This is a very fun, well-written, book to read or be read to! Jana Oriana Young states (and I agree): “Each day we awake, let’s be happy to cheer for God has blessed us throughout the year.”
