As soon as Rebecca entered the house, she could tell something was off. Just a feeling but she knew her home and something wasn’t right. She stood for a moment without turning on the lights. She moved slowly through the living room. Nothing looked out of place. She started toward the kitchen and there it was. A shadow. Now she wished she had listened to Hershel and kept her small pistol in her purse. Hershel had bought it for her after their experience with the drug smugglers six months ago. She had even taken lessons but none of that was going to do her any good now. The pistol was upstairs in the draw of her bedside table. And the shadow was between her and the stairs.

Hershel always said if you can’t get away and you have no weapon---hide. So that’s what she did.

Rebecca slipped inside the closet just off the living room. She felt in her purse for her phone and being as quiet as possible called Andrew. As soon as he answered she said, “I need some help, someone is in the house. I’m hiding in the closet off the living room. How quick can you get here?”

Andrew’s entire body went cold. “Rebecca don’t move I’m on the way. I can be there in less than ten minutes. Just stay quiet. I’m on the way.” He repeated. “Rebecca, do you hear me I’m coming?”

But Rebecca didn’t answer. She was already gone.

Linda Mangram was born, and lives in Opelika, Alabama, with her husband, Craig, and dog, Roscoe. She is retired from AT&T, and now enjoys a slower pace of life. As a child, her mother took her to the local public library once a week where she was allowed to search the children’s section for the latest Nancy Drew mysteries. Her love of reading stems from those wonderful Saturday mornings. Her love of writing also started at a very young age although she never had time to actually write a book until she retired. She published two books of poetry before she found her true love in writing—mysteries. This current book is the second in a series that she hopes to continue.
