During a lucid moment, an Alzheimer’s patient tells amateur sleuth Biodina d’Angelo that 40 years ago he killed his lumberyard partner in the Cascades of Washington state. Biodina begins searching historical records, and a clever fraud scheme is uncovered, along with news articles about a missing lumberyard owner. Along the way, her intuitive nature and nosiness helps her uncover another murder of a well-respected record producer. Will the murderess be a starstruck performer, a jealous wife, or a vindictive assistant?

After fourteen years of teaching and running a large university department, Dr. Vicki Shelton left academia to sing opera in Europe. Upon returning, she began a career in the financial services industry, working with wealthy individuals and families. She was engaged to speak at seminars and programs on topics such as Raising Healthy Heirs with Wealth, The Forgotten Generation, EMOTIONOMICS (a word she coined), and The Importance of Trusts in your Estate Plan, along with company-approved marketing materials written by Dr. Shelton for the events, and for business journals and newspapers. She now writes mysteries and resides in Longbranch, Washington.

Murder in the Cascades is a gripping, atmospheric mystery that had me hooked from the first page to the last. Vicki Shelton crafts a compelling blend of suspense, rich characterization, and vivid scenery that transports you deep into the heart of the Pacific Northwest. The novel kicks off with an intriguing murder that immediately sets a dark, chilling tone. The plot unfolds with expert pacing—each chapter pulling you deeper into the mystery, and just when you think you’ve figured it out, Shelton throws in another twist that leaves you guessing. The characters are fleshed out and relatable, especially the protagonist, whose determination and intelligence make her a standout. Shelton’s writing shines most in her ability to evoke the setting. The Cascade Mountains are almost a character in themselves—beautiful, wild, and dangerous. Her descriptions are so immersive, I could practically feel the cold mountain air and hear the crunch of pine needles underfoot. If you love a well-written mystery with strong female leads, a hauntingly beautiful setting, and a satisfying ending that ties it all together, Murder in the Cascades should be at the top of your list. Vicki Shelton has delivered a masterful debut (or another gem, if you’re already a fan), and I can’t wait to read what she writes next.

What makes this book unique is its blend of elements: the exploration of a cold case intertwined with a contemporary murder mystery. The inclusion of an Alzheimer's patient's confession adds an additional layer of complexity and intrigue to the story. The author skillfully weaves together historical records, fraud schemes, and a music industry backdrop to create a multi-faceted and engaging plot. Some of the good points of this book include its intriguing premise, the use of historical research to uncover secrets, and the development of a complex and diverse cast of characters. The reader can expect a mix of suspense, detective work, and psychological exploration as Biodina navigates the world of cold cases, fraud, and murder. The book also provides insights into the challenges and triumphs faced by amateur detectives and their unconventional methods of solving crimes.
