A great action book with a wonderful love story! This historical fiction saga begins with a crisis in the life of Homer Harris before World War Two. Difficult legal events are presented and evil is overcome with the help of many good people. Challenging experiences at the U.S. Naval Academy prepare Homer for a decisive role in the Merchant Marine and the U.S. Navy. Pearl Harbor changes everything when the American and German storylines merge during a desperate sea battle. You can feel the action with incredibly creative soldiers and sailors responding to leadership that will propel Homer from Ensign to America's youngest Admiral. The story leads you through interesting developments that include Australia, India, England, the Coca-Cola Company, financial institutions, and the military industrial complex. Two fine women appreciate Homer's faith character, kindness, and courage. One will become his bride at a White House wedding with President Roosevelt as best man. This captivating story will take you on a journey into the past that will resonate until the very end, keeping you up turning pages until you are finished.

  • Exciting Battle Scenes

This was a very interesting and exciting story. Homer, our lead character, has one of the most eventful lives I have ever read. I enjoyed his early years and later the culmination of his military service but I must say my favourite part of the book was the service he performed aboard ship. The description and strategy of the battle scenes were so realistic to me, I could feel the listing and smell the smoke as bombs were being fired toward the enemy. Homer's ingenuity and follow-through were very entertaining and had me on the edge of my chair reading way past my bedtime. Well done Mr Girvan, well done.

  • Best Book Ever

A book I couldn't put down. It was very interesting reading. The people were interesting and place too. Hope he writes another book. Will gladly buy another one of his books. I definitely enjoyed his book and read it in one day. Thanks, Don Girvan for a great book!

  • Hard to put down, needed to know what will happen next

I must say it did take me a bit to get used to the authors writing style. I quickly started to transition from mentally critiquing the style to realizing I did not care and was engrossed in the story. Read the book in two sessions as I could not put it down for long. I am a history buff but not normally with fiction, so this is not even my normal read. I can also have a short attention span. This book is a natural condensed read and does not linger on frilly language or transitions but leaps to the point of the matter. Instead of most books where I find myself skipping paragraphs, I read every word. The story does get a bit too fanciful at times.

  • Great Book!!

Broadside is a great combination of a war story and a love story filled with suspense. From page one to the very end, it captures your attention. This is a must-read!!! Don Girvan is a talented author and I can't wait to read the sequel.

  • A wonderful blend of real history and fiction

A wonderful blend of history with fiction and unforgettable characters. A perfect vacation companion for the whole family. Exciting naval engagements and love combined throughout. A great 5 star read!

  • Great Book and Fun Read

Loved this book! So many great characters and I loved how this book weaved a Great War story with the love story. No profanity either which was welcomed as I enjoyed the book!

  • A WWII fictional novel with intriguing twists around the globe!

Read this book in two days. Found it hard to put down-it was that interesting. A very good historical WWII fiction utilizing real-world events with fictional characters and plots. Not a difficult read for any adult, but detailed and intriguing enough to maintain interest from beginning to end no matter the reader intellect level. WWII buffs would enjoy the military and political event connections. This is a definite book to read more than once.

  • Awesome story

A historically correct novel of a young man who lost both parents in a tragic accident. In spite of his youth and inexperience, he took the path of courage and honour to carve out a bright and beautiful future for himself. The author shows that you can write a book that will keep you at the edge of your seat without using profanity, even in a military setting. BRAVO! I can't wait to read the sequel.
