When tradition twists with popular culture and lands on “people’s oral humor,” idealistic Reuben Lamberth finds himself in a mess. He is a young, progressive, inspired scholar teaching at a prestigious northeastern university, but his other unique self has another foot planted secretly in the world of standup comedy as Josh Sandburg. His stage name is a composite of ‘joshing’ and the renowned American poet Carl Sandburg. Neither his fully tenured professor wife Byrra who is enmeshed in a cabal of women’s faculty; his tough minor gangster-hood father Solly; his staid sociology chairperson and conventional colleagues; nor his tyrannical University President Jeremiah Brittle have any idea that he performs in comedy clubs as Josh Sandburg. Should he be outed, there is considerable doubt that he will be upgraded to the coveted position of tenure, and his marriage may suffer as well. Reuben wonders, Is it worth giving up academia and taking a flyer in the world of comedy culture? The finale in this novel reveals tantalizing internecine connections that land squarely the realm of people’s oral humor.

"A Comedy of Pretzels" is an unusual novel for those readers who want something more while reading a fictional story. The novel itself (at 230 pages) has all the ingredients of a good story - colorful characters, issues to be solved, secrets, entertaining dialogue, uncertainty about how the plot will conclude. But there's more -- much more. There are also other complex and engaging characters. Ruben's father is a criminal or sorts who loves Damon Runyon stories and seems to live some of them. Ruben's wife is also a college professor but she, like Ruben, harbors a secret. So we have a happily married couple keeping a major secret from the other. This can't be good as we discover. There is also a nasty university president with a glass eye who lacks humor and kindness and holds Ruben's tenure decision in his diabolical hands. I finished this book having enjoyed the journey of the plot; and having absorbed a great deal of information about comedy, types of humor and jokes, and knowledge that I've acquired without sitting through lectures or reading college text books. The result was an enjoyable and enriching reading experience.”
