J. T. Williams was born in Nevada and was exposed to mining at an early age. His interests are diverse and numerous which include old cars, organic gardening, prospecting, writing and poetry. He was exposed to native American culture at an early age through association with neighbors of Paiute ancestry and a father who may have had mixed native ancestry.
