Raleigh Bell was a naval aviator in the 1960s who roomed with aviators who were in the Battle of Midway. What some saw and learned gave him the interest to write this story. The author explains that this was a battle we shouldn't have won and if we had lost, what weapons Germany had that might have changed the outcome of World War II.
