Lisa Johnson
The author is a doctor of dentistry with three master’s degrees and two bachelor’s degrees in science, one of which is from the UC Berkeley College of Chemistry. She is both a Noyce Scholar in Mathematics and a descendant of the American slave trade. She came from a middle-class family of all girls, born in Montgomery, Alabama, during the Civil Rights Movement but was raised in the quiet, predominantly White town of Hayward, California. As a scientist who has visited every continent except Australia and the poles (she believes), she is very curious and educated.
