Joyce Di Lorenzo
Displaced from Indonesia, my country of birth, I lived the first 10 years of my life in Holland with my mother, grandmother, and younger sister. Thanks to my mother’s unwavering courage and determination to pursue the American dream, I became an immigrant child who had the privilege of growing up in the United States. My profoundly happy childhood was a treasure trove of diverse experiences and a worldview of three cultures that enriched and shaped my character as an adult. As I became an American, my grandmother ensured I stayed connected to my Indonesian heritage, while my mother’s upbringing solidified my deep-rooted Dutch culture.
