Roy Brummell was born in the rural village of Dartmouth on Guyana’s Essequibo Coast. He was educated at Multilateral Teachers’ College for high school trainees, and the University of Guyana. Roy served Guyana as a high school teacher of English Language and Literature, storyteller, and folklorist.
Roy migrated to the United States in 1988. He attended New York’s City College, earning two master’s degrees—Special Education, and School Administration—and served as an educator in Brooklyn for over twenty years.
